Choosing a Wedding Dress and Bridal Accessories – Top Tips

As soon as you’ve said “yes” to the big question, your mind will start thinking of how you want your wedding day to be and choosing a wedding dress. Of course, you’ve probably been thinking of this since you were a little girl and so the style and location of your wedding day will already be clear in your mind. Once you have agreed this with the groom-to-be, mum, etc, you’ll have a huge amount of things to begin planning.

Planning a wedding is no small undertaking but usually you will have great support from family and friends; but the one decision that it likely to be yours alone will be choosing a wedding dress. Choosing a dress design can be quite difficult and the different materials and colours available multiply the choices plus all of the complementary bridal accessories, so getting a second opinion from family and friends is a great idea..

The time of year for your wedding will be one of the deciding factors when choosing a wedding dress; a summer wedding will mean needing a lighter fabric (you do not want to be passing out because of the heat) and, likewise, colder times of the year might mean choosing a wedding dress in a heavier fabric to keep you warmer.

Naturally, if you are getting married in Britain then planning for a change in weather conditions is never a bad idea; August in the UK does not always mean lovely sunshine and heat. Of the many bridal accessories to choose from, a wedding cloak is a great idea for any time of the year as even a lovely summers day can turn cold in the evening. If the location of your wedding means walking outside then a wedding cloak will help you stay warm and you’ll still look gorgeous.

Other bridal accessories include a wedding wrap or stole. A wedding wrap or stole is also a perfect idea for keeping your shoulders warm should it turn a bit chilly and is a practical idea that keeps you looking glamorous. Of course, on a good summers day you wont need them but as wedding accessories go they are not too expensive and, therefore, are an excellent idea to have on standby just in case. Other wedding accessories to think about might be wedding and bridal umbrellas or parasols.

If you are getting married on the beach then choosing a wedding dress that is shorter will be necessary but other locations will open up other choices for you. A traditional church or historic building can be the perfect setting for a traditional, formal wedding gown whereas a civil ceremony might determine choosing a wedding dress that is more modest. It’s your big day so choosing a wedding dress that you love is your final decision but input from others will always help.

When choosing a wedding dress the right fabric is a most important decision for planning your perfect wedding. Your style of wedding gown and bridal accessories will help set the theme for your wedding. Remember that you will be wearing the dress for hours; that you may have to go up and down stairs; you will be sat down for a long period and you will end the day dancing in it!

The colour of your wedding dress is another element that contributes to the style and theme of your wedding day. White is the traditional colour that has been popular since the 1700’s and denotes purity but more recent times have seen many stronger colours become fashionable. Many online wedding dress stores will have a colour chart that guide you to how the colour and fabric can change the look of a wedding dress; so try them for ideas. Once you have made the decision on the colour of your wedding dress, think of a complementary colour for the chief bridesmaid and flower girls. Do make sure too that they are all comfortable with your choice!

Very important wedding accessories include your shoes. You are going to be on your feet for a long part of the day so being comfortable is really important. Finally, bridal accessories complete the look with perhaps a veil, tiara, gloves and your wedding day lingerie.

So there is much to think about when choosing a wedding dress and wedding accessories with your budget being a strong determining factor. You do not necessarily need to spend a fortune on a wedding dress or bridal accessories. Spending a large amount of money does not guarantee the perfect dress and neither does buying cheap wedding dress mean poor quality. There are many online stores supplying wedding dresses and bridal accessories. These online wedding dress stores may just save you lots of money when choosing a wedding dress.

Have fun choosing, keep the surprise from your husband-to-be and enjoy your wedding day!

To summarise, our top ten tips for choosing a wedding dress are:

LACE DRESSES

Which one of you brides has always wanted and dreamt of having a lace dress? This blog post is going to inform you on everything you need to know about finding your perfect lace dress. All fabrics that wedding dresses use are all beautiful, but none of them come close to how romantic and historical lace is.

Back in history, when a bride would wear lace at her wedding, this demonstrated the wealth of your family and prosperity. It would tell everyone that you came from a wealthy family and that you could afford to get married in a lace wedding dress. Things have changed since then, and that is not what people think of when they attend a wedding. Now you see more lace on a dining room table or in the house, but you do not see it as a symbol of wealth.

Lace wedding dresses are still around though. They are very popular in the wedding dress world. But now, you can see lace not only as the whole dress but little bits and pieces of lace throughout the bride’s attire for her big day. For instance, in her veil, as an sash around her waist, of course the all over lace look, or even just lace being placed on the skirt or top of the dress.

SHORT WEDDING DRESSES

When you are searching for your perfect wedding dress, don’t get something that you won’t love. If you don’t want to get a long dress with a cathedral train, then don’t. Do what you want to do because when it comes down to it, this day will be all about you. If you have always pictured yourself in a short, playful wedding dress, then try and find what you have always envisioned. Trust me, there are some short wedding dresses that are to die for, you may just have to look a little bit harder. Some of the reasons why brides may choose a short wedding dress over a long and traditional dress is if the wedding is more informal, on a beach, at a court house, a summer/spring wedding, or even if the bride just wants to be different!

Short wedding dresses are also becoming very popular for brides that want to have two different dresses for their big day. They will a formal and elegant dress for their ceremony and then at some point during their reception, they will switch into a more playful and sexy short dress.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF FABRICS

With going along with the last post that I did, I felt that it was necessary to cover some of the basic types of fabrics that every bride should be familiar with. Every kind of fabric has its own way to flow and make the dress appear. Another thing for brides to consider is that a fabric will look completely different on every bride. Finding the right fabric is just like finding the right shape of your wedding dress. I hope that the description of the top five wedding dress fabrics will help you in finding the perfect dress!!!

Satin- When you look at the fabric satin, you see the shinny surface and the glowing effect that is appealing. Most of the time, the wedding dresses will be embellished my adding lace, beads, or gems to make a dress have more glam. Satin dresses are a very free and flowing kind of fabric that lead to a sexy, romantic look.

Silk -It is the most luxurious fabrics manufactured. This fabric is very breathable and versatile. It is also very flowing and free to walk in. Because of the smooth surface it has, it clings and fits a body of a bride that is a gorgeous look to a romantic wedding.

Organza- This is one of the stiffer fabrics that you will find when you go wedding dress shopping. Because of the stiffness of this fabric, you will most likely find it in the dresses that have a fuller skirt or many layers. You will also find this fabric with a light lace overlay on it also. Lace always adds an additional touch to a glowing fabric.

Brocade- This kind of fabric can make a dress look from traditional to modern and even stylish. Usually soft brocade is used for wedding dresses to make them look more formal and elegant. Some of these dresses will have a pattern in them by using threads woven into them. Also, you might see these elegant dresses in royal weddings that indicate status.

Every Bride Dreams of Having the Perfect Wedding, But for This They Need the Perfect Wedding Dress

Every bride dreams of having the perfect wedding, but for this they need the perfect wedding dress, with the bridesmaid’s dresses complimenting the brides dress. The problem is; how do you choose the most beautiful dress when there are so many gorgeous wedding dresses to choose from.

It is often the hardest part of the wedding for the Bride to organise, agonising over the look, style, price, colour, shape and fit. The most important thing to remember when looking for a wedding dress is to focus on the features of the dress that are most important to you as the bride. This will allow you to narrow down your search to find to the dress that suits you best, and of course in these financially difficult times one that suits your budget.

Every bride planning a wedding will be on a budget and they will often look at the price of the wedding dresses as the before all else. A good designer will tailor their dresses to target different budgets and markets and brides will search for dresses from within a certain price range and select the best dresses to look at more closely. This way they are more likely to find a dress that they can comfortably afford.

Another way of controlling the cost of a wedding dress is by choosing a wedding dress from a previous season’s collection. Brides go through various websites and magazines and select from among the dresses featured there. When doing this it is a good idea to make a note of the designer of the wedding dresses how much the dresses sell for. This will help identify styles and designers that will most suit your idea of the perfect wedding dress and help find the best price for your preferred designer or style of dress.

But what do you do when you just can’t seem to find ‘the one’ for you? If you are tall and slim, you could wear just about anything, and still look wonderful. Sadly it is not so easy when you are either short, hourglass shaped, or even pear shaped, or over a size 16 (uk).

Some Brides choose to have bespoke wedding dresses, but a custom made wedding gown may come at a premium price. Some brides are in the fortunate position of knowing someone who can make the dress for them and others seek to have the dress made in the Far East. Having the dress made in China or some other country has its pit falls and you should consider ensuring the dress arrives, a good two or three month, before your wedding. Although, in the past there have been negative stories of purchase from e-bay, my personal recommendation is e-bay is the safest way to buy such an item from the Far East. This is because if there is a dispute or poor workmanship when paying with PayPal on eBay the buyer has financial protection.

Some brides are also quite conscious of the name of the designer and dresses with ‘designer labels’ are viewed by many as a status symbol, hence attracting a lot interest from those who value couture clothing.

I believe that every bride can and should look her best on her wedding day, form choosing the best wedding venue to the best dress, the wedding should be as perfect as it can be. Many, many brides nowadays are having their wedding gowns made, simply because they cannot buy a dress off-the-rack to fit or even suit them. Having your wedding dress made to measure is certainly the best way to go, if you are not a standard size or shape.

The traditional white wedding is still the most popular wedding idea. Although the off whites are far more prevalent then they have been in the past, ivory, cream or apple white take the harshness of the traditional white dress and softens the contrast between tanned skin and make-up.

Used Wedding Dresses: How to Find the Perfect Second Hand Dress For Your Wedding

All brides want to look and feel their absolute best on their wedding day. Finding the perfect wedding dress is one of the most important parts of planning a wedding. Unfortunately not all brides can afford to buy the brand new designer gown that was just featured on the cover of the latest bridal magazine. For brides that are on a tight budget, buying used wedding dresses is a good way to go.

For some brides, there is still a stigma when it comes to wearing a dress that was previously owned by someone else. Just because it was another bride’s wedding gown does not make it any less special for your wedding. Many used wedding dresses look just like new. Obviously they were only worn once, some may never have even made it to the alter making it completely new. You would be surprised how many gorgeous dresses you can find that have been pre-owned.

The prices of used wedding dresses can be fractions of their original cost. Most of the time you are able to get savings of up to 50 -75% off. The price will depend in large part on the condition of the dress. If it looks like it didn’t even make it out of the store, the asking price will probably be higher. If it’s a designer dress, expect to pay more as well. Designer dresses are hard to come by, and you are still paying significantly less for it than you would for a brand new dress so it’s still a great deal.

As more brides are considering buying used wedding dresses, the places that are offering them for sale are steadily increasing. The first place to go look for pre-owned dresses is a brick and mortar consignment shop. Remember to always ask the clerk if they have any wedding dresses there. Don’t assume they don’t carry any if you don’t see it displayed in the store. Some wedding dresses can be quite bulky and are stored in the back.

Online sites such as Bravo Bride and Once Wed are another great resource. They specialize in bringing brides together to buy and sell wedding dresses. These online marketplaces let brides who no longer want their dress to post on there and sell it at deep discounts to new brides looking to find one. They will often include lengthy descriptions of how the dress looks with lots of pictures so the buyer has enough information to make a purchasing decision.

Besides being able to get your wedding dress cheap, there are other benefits for buying used wedding dresses. One of the best reasons is that it is extremely eco-friendly. By recycling these dresses, you are making a great contribution to the environment. Instead of ordering a dress months in advance at a bridal boutique and go in for numerous fittings to make sure it fits perfectly, if you try on a used dress that fits well, you can take it home immediately. Any kind of imperfection can be fixed by a skilled tailor. You can score a brand name dress that you can actually afford. Last but not least, most wedding dresses do not go out of style so quickly. Dresses from a few seasons ago are still trendy today, so you will still look like the fashionable bride that you are.

Wedding Dress Rental: How to Get Your Dream Dress Without Spending a Fortune

As more and more brides are becoming budget conscious, wedding dress rental companies are sprouting up everywhere. Even though a lot of brides still feel uncomfortable with the idea of renting a dress for her wedding, it is slowly becoming more acceptable. Think about it, you can probably wear the dress of your dreams without breaking the bank. Since you only wear it once, you should forget about any attachments you might have for the dress.

With wedding dress rental businesses booming, you are likely to see much more variety than you are used to. Most people have the misconception that only cheap dresses that are conventional and nothing special are available for rent. A lot of these larger rental facilities carry wedding dresses at all price points and in any style you can imagine. Don’t be surprised to find designer gowns among their collection. Where else can you go to get a designer wedding dress to wear for your wedding that never in a million years would you be able to afford?

One of the best parts of renting a wedding dress is that you will not have to worry about what to do with the dress after the ceremony is over. Most wedding dresses are huge and take up a lot of space. You have to figure out the best way to preserve and store the dress so it still holds up years from now. Sure, you won’t have anything to pass on to your daughter, but by that time your dress might be completely outdated anyway.

There should be wedding dress rental places in every major city as well as a few online ones. It’s important to be able to try on these dresses, because some places do not allow any alterations so the dress has to fit you perfectly. These rental stores are great, because most of them carry more than just wedding dresses. They also stock shoes, veils, jewelry and other wedding accessories. You can get everything to complete your wedding day look all from one place, and it will be extremely affordable. If you are having a destination wedding, it’s an even better idea to rent your dress at the destination of the wedding. There is no need to worry about transporting the dress and keeping it in pristine condition.

When you deal with a wedding dress rental business, it’s important to ask a lot of questions. For instance, you should find out whether or not they allow alterations on their dresses. Make sure you know exactly how many days before the wedding the dress will be delivered and when it needs to be returned. Verify the amount for deposit and ask about fees for damages before signing the contract. What happens if the dress is not delivered within the date promised? Iron out all the details with the company so you know exactly what to expect. The wedding dress is one of the most important things to have ready for the wedding, so make sure all your bases are covered.

Top 10 Wedding Dress Shopping Mistakes

There are many common mistakes brides make when they come wedding dress shopping – often because they are underprepared or unwilling to think beyond the ideal vision that they have in their head. But wedding dress shopping needn’t be stressful, or fruitless, or time-consuming. Here are our top 10 mistakes that brides make when shopping for a wedding dress – try to avoid these and you should be fine!

1. Not knowing their budget

Unless you really do have an unlimited amount to spend, you should have an idea of what you can afford. Obviously your budget will go a lot further if you choose to shop for discount wedding dresses, from a factory outlet or discount designer store, but you still need to know what your limit is.

2. Not considering extra costs

When you budget for your outfit, you need to remember that you will be wearing more than just a dress! You need to consider your shoes, underwear, a veil if you will be wearing one, any jewellery you don’t already own (I’m guessing most of us didn’t have a tiara before we got married!), and even your hair and make up should be included.

3. Bringing too many people

You should definitely bring someone. Many people bring their mum and a sister or a close friend. Whoever you choose, they should be people you trust to give an honest opinion but also not try to influence you to choose a dress they like rather than the one you like! Any more than two people and you’re going to end up with too many different viewpoints, which can get confusing for you. Besides, you want your wedding dress to be a surprise for as many people as possible on the big day!

4. Getting all made up to come wedding dress shopping

Okay, so wedding dress shopping feels more special than normal shopping, but there really is no need to get all dressed up for us! You should make sure that you are wearing a well-fitting bra if you are likely to need extra support under your wedding dress, but apart from that, casual is fine. In fact, we would prefer you didn’t wear any make up that could get smudged off on to the dresses.

5. Shopping too early (or too late!)

Shopping too late is less of a concern for shopping at wedding dress factory outlets, for example, as these dresses don’t need to be made from scratch for you, but you should still aim to leave enough time for any alterations. As for shopping too early, you really need to at least have the wedding date booked, and preferably the venue, as both of these decisions will influence what style of dress you choose. Also, if you aren’t ready to make the purchase, you could fall in love with a dress that isn’t available when you have the money ready.

6. Not having done a bit of research before

It’s all very well having an open mind as to what style of dress you want, but you should have some idea about what you like. Knowing your venue will help (beach weddings have a very different dress code to church weddings!), but take the time to look at some pictures and see what appeals to you. Perhaps you prefer plainer dresses to the more detailed ones, or a detachable train to a built in one. If you have no idea where to start, it can be a bit bewildering to look at all the wedding dresses on the rails!

7. Only trying one style on

Conversely, being adamant you will only try on white strapless ballgowns, may mean you miss out on a dress that would suit you more, as well as restricting your choice somewhat.

8. Trying to buy a smaller size saying “I’ll lose weight before the wedding”

It’s so easy to say, but not as easy to achieve, and while we’re not saying that you won’t lose weight before your big day, it is worth remembering that most dresses can be taken in by as many as four sizes without affecting the style. Letting a dress out is much more difficult, and if it is possible, you will only be able to let it out by one size. So choose a dress that fits now, and have it taken in when you lose that weight!

9. Forgetting they have to spend a whole day in the dress

This sounds obvious, but many people will try a dress on and decide to buy it without even trying to sit down in it. The wedding dress is for more than just the ceremony, so think about how comfortable it will be to wear while sitting down, eating and even dancing in. This is particularly important with corset style bodices that can be restricting, and fishtail dresses, which if too closely fitted can stop you being able to sit down at all!

10. Buying a dress you don’t love

This is YOUR dress. It should be the dress that you keep comparing all other dresses to (I still do this 4 years after my wedding, and so far, I still love my wedding dress more than any other!). Choosing a dress because it made your mother well up, or just because it has a coloured trim that will match the bridesmaid’s dresses is really not advisable. You aren’t planning to do this more than once, so make sure to buy the wedding dress of your dreams.

3 Ways To Find Cheap Wedding Dresses

If you’re a to-be bride but also considering a budget while planning, then cheap wedding dresses are ideal to start off your hunt for wedding related shopping.

Many brides would think that if they buy an inexpensive dress for their wedding, then they are opting for a low quality and non-branded piece of clothing for the most important day of their lives. This isn’t however true. Just because a dress comes cheap doesn’t necessarily imply that it has to look second grade. Today in fact there are many brides, who are opting for discount dresses.

Every woman dreams of an ideal wedding and would love to splurge and buy a luxurious and pricey wedding dress for the special day; however, most women don’t have a huge wedding budget. All the more, spending thousands of dollars on just one dress, that too for one day, does not seem logical for a lot of us, so buying dresses is an intelligent and the safest option in such cases. Buying inexpensive gowns is a perfect option for all those brides that wish to keep the wedding cost down to an achievable amount.

Now let’s see a few stores where we can buy some lovely yet cheap wedding dresses:

Rentals – There are dresses rental stores out there that will allow you to rent these dresses for inexpensive prices. Although most of the gowns here are used wedding gowns, but that does not mean that it’s below your dignity to buy and wear them. Most of the dresses here are in a perfect condition. Nonetheless, this is a cheap and right way of buying a wedding gown only if you don’t wish to treasure and keep your dress forever, after your wedding.

Outlet Shops – You’ll find many outlet shops selling wedding gowns and dresses from the previous year’s collection that has been exhibited for selling at reduced prices. As and when the new wedding dresses arrive at a shop, the dresses which are leftover are then moved on to these outlet stores.

An outlet store is where you can fetch a wedding dress priced at as high as $1,000 for almost half the original price. Only because these dresses are from last year’s fashion trend, doesn’t necessarily make them less fashionable. It only means that the shop needs more room for the latest wedding dresses and so are offering affordable dresses to people.

Thrift Shops – If you don’t have a deluxe budget for a grand wedding, then don’t let disappointment take the toll on you, as thrift shops are excellent to buy beautiful wedding gowns. Many people in today’s times don’t wish to preserve their special wedding gowns for future memories so they donate these to the thrift shops for other people to buy.

These are nearly as lovely to look at as the other wedding dresses that you would otherwise buy from a regular branded store. Moreover, wedding dresses are meant to be worn only once, so they don’t get dirty or ruined in any way, hence are almost new when you shop for these from a thrift shop.

It shouldn’t matter how small or big your wedding day budget is; what needs to matter is the way you prioritize money and other things, in a way that you can buy things in an amount which your pocket can afford, including cheap dresses. Whether you’re looking out for a brand new wedding dress or a used one, clearance wedding dresses are just as pretty and to top that, they won’t cost you a fortune.

How to Pack a Wedding Dress for Travel

So you are getting married abroad? You may now be wondering about that all important wedding gown and how best to take it with you to your wedding destination. This article is based on industry knowledge and first hand tales of brides that we have dealt with over the years.

Specialist wedding gown cleaning is often carried out on dresses prior to going away to your wedding destination. Sometimes, brides will buy a secondhand dress and have it cleaned first. If this is you then it is probably easier to have a professional wedding dress cleaning company box it up for you in a wedding travel box. This type of box is most suitable for travel with your dress and also is made from PH neutral card and contains acid free tissue. The whole purpose of this box is that your gown will stay with you at all times on-board the aircraft.

If you have purchased a brand new dress from a wedding gown shop then using the same type of box is your best option also. The wedding gown shop should be more than happy to pack your dress for you.

After all alterations have been carried out and you have had your final fitting at the bridal store, ask them to pack the dress for you. In a box you supply to them or they may be able to sell you a wedding travel box directly.

There are several on-line companies that sell travel boxes but please always ask for PH Neutral card (heavy) and acid free tissue for packaging the dress. Please note that in general the cheaper boxes also do not have a thick corded carrying handle but a plastic handle that pushes into the box thus making it unsuitable to store your dress in afterwards.

If you have purchased the dress and have it at home then it is recommended using a wedding dress travel box and packing the wedding dress yourself.

Step 1. Layer the acid free tissue in the bottom of the box and then around the edges.

Step 2. Try to estimate the number of folds required to get the dress into the box with the bodice facing upwards on the last fold.

Step 3. Lay the train in the bottom of the box then place tissue over and tuck in tightly at the sides

Step 4. Fold the dress over and press down firmly now lay more tissue over this folded layer tucking in tightly at the sides.

Step 5. Finally fold the dress with the bodice facing to the top of the box again pressing down firmly and again place tissue over and tuck firmly into the sides.

Step 6. Now don’t forget the Veil and tiara if you have one… then place the lid on and securely using the drawer string.

Tips:

– Don’t try to pack the hoops and under skirt into the travel box.

– Don’t panic if your dress looks squashed – most wedding destinations will have steamers to steam the wedding dress on arrival.

– Always check with your airline the maximum size of hand luggage allowed on board the aircraft.

– Wedding dress travel boxes come in many sizes and colors.

– Unpack your wedding dress as soon as possible to avoid bad creases setting in.

– Some airlines do allow the wedding dress on board in the cabin in the gown bag hanging compartment but check with your airline!

– DO NOT put your precious dress in your suit case – It may not arrive with you and liquids can ruin and damage your dress if they leak in the hold of the aircraft.

– If you MUST put the wedding dress into a suitcase and into the hold of the aircraft then please make sure you cover the whole dress with a strong water tight plastic bag.

Most Wedding Travel Boxes come with a cord handle instead of ribbon and lace that holds the lid in place as you carry. These sturdy boxes protect the dress from any untoward accidents whilst traveling, and can be used after the day for storing the wedding dress in.

The standard size wedding dress travel box dimensions are as follows:

Wedding Travel Maxi: 35 x 55 x 20 cm (deep) – The Travel Maxi provides the maximum space allowed in the overhead lockers, to fit within the hand luggage dimensions requested by major airlines. Please check with your airline. The depth allows for a fuller skirt and veil.

Flying with Thomas Cook? Thomas Cook has restricted hand luggage of 42 x 27 x 22 cm, which is not the ideal shape for a wedding dress, but there is a Wedding Travel Slim Box that is especially for Thomas Cook flights.

Choosing the Colour of Your Wedding Dress

White wedding dresses aren’t the only choice when it comes to modern bridalwear! More and more brides are choosing coloured and patterned wedding gowns to show their individuality and colour-theme their wedding. Choosing a coloured wedding gown can add an extra dimension to your wedding look, and each different colour has different meanings and significances that you might want to take into account when making your decision.

Blue

Light blue is a calming and serene colour, reflecting the colour of the ocean and the sky, whereas deep and dark blues are sumptuous and give the appearance of quality and wealth. Electric and bright blues are dynamic and make a real statement, but beware of overusing blues as they can also create a cold atmosphere.

Yellow

Yellow brings to mind the brightness of summer, flowers and sunshine, and is uplifting and full of youthful optimism. For a more mature look, use golden yellows to create a glamorous atmosphere for your wedding. Yellow is a stimulating and creative colour and is perfect for an energetic, outdoor summer wedding. Recent wedding trends pair yellow with grey for beautiful, understated wedding gowns.

Green

Green is the colour of spring and new beginnings as well as the natural world and, more recently, anything ‘eco’ themed. Great for an outdoor wedding, green is a tranquil, peaceful and refreshing tone. Green is a popular colour for bridesmaid’s dresses, too.

Orange

Orange is a strong, autumnal colour, which can be bold or earthy, depending on the tone. A warming colour, orange is becoming more popular in its muted shades, for example peach or terracotta, both of which add a subtle interest to a wedding outfit. Bright oranges are fun and flamboyant and are sure to raise a smile on your wedding day!

Purple

Purple has a regal history, and gives a sense of luxury and elegance to a wedding dress. Use dark shades sparingly, however, to avoid overwhelming with such a strong tone. Lighter tones of purple are uplifting, and are often chosen by creative people.

Red

Red is traditionally the colour of love, and it is has a warming, romantic effect. The use of red for your wedding dress will make you the centre of attention, either as a block colour or used as an accent on a predominantly white dress. Dark reds are a perfect choice for an intimate winter wedding.

Brown

Browns and beiges are becoming more popular as wedding dress colours, especially when choosing a vintage wedding dress. Brown is an earthy, traditional and organic colour, giving a feeling of wholesomeness and stability. Vintage wedding gowns are often made in subtle, delicate tones of brown, beige and peach, and you can accessories wonderfully with this colour by using lace, pearls and wooden beads.

Black

Don’t be afraid of a black wedding dress! Black is a sophisticated and classic colour for a dress, especially if you are having a clean-cut, contemporary wedding, or a black tie affair. Black is a strong, authoritative colour, and of course pairs excellently with white for a twist on the traditional.

You can experiment with colour when choosing your wedding gown in many ways:

Some wedding dresses are all one colour, with detailing in lace, beadwork or different textures and structure.
You might want to stick to a white or pale wedding gown and use touches and accents of colour in the form of a sash or buttons, shoes or a bolero.
Think about accessorising with colour, from shoes to headwear, jewellery or an umbrella!
Match your wedding dress’s colour to your groom’s outfit, or your bridesmaids, bouquet or even your venue’s decor.
Why not go for a pattern or print rather than a plain colour?
Ombre shading is a very popular trend right now, as seen in Gwen Stefani’s pink wedding dress, which grew darker from top to bottom.
Find two colours which complement each other and work your wedding theme around them, perhaps one for your wedding dress and one for your groom!
